Weem Hill

The walk up Weem Hill from Aberfeldy is proper short but surprisingly rewarding. You're looking at maybe an hour round trip from the town, following a well-trodden path that climbs steadily without being a slog. What makes it worthwhile is the view across the Tay Valley once you've crested the top - the landscape just opens out, rolling farmland and distant hills stretching away in all directions.

It's one of those hills that works brilliantly if you've got young kids or aren't in the mood for a full-day mountain expedition. Families working from one of the nearby caravan parks - Aberfeldy Caravan Park is barely three miles away - could easily fit this in before lunch. Walkers doing a longer circuit round Aberfeldy will find it slots naturally into a morning outing.

Go in decent weather. There's not much shelter on top, and when the cloud comes in fast - which it does in this part of Perthshire - you lose the whole point. Early autumn is cracking, when the light's lower and the air's clearer. Parkdean Resorts Tummel Valley Holiday Park, a bit further south, makes a solid base for exploring the wider area including this hill and the nearby lochs.

Access is free and unrestricted. Allow the full hour plus a bit extra if you want to sit around and actually look at the view rather than just tick the box. It's not a challenge, but it's a properly pleasant use of an afternoon.
