Creag Loisgte

The walk up Creag Loisgte isn't long, but it's steep enough to earn respect. Based near Aberfeldy in Perthshire, this peak rewards you with proper views across the Tay Valley and beyond - on a clear day you're looking at a panorama that stretches for miles. The path itself is straightforward, well-trodden, and takes most people around an hour to reach the summit, give or take. Families with confident walkers will manage fine; younger kids might find it a bit punishing on the legs.

What makes it work is the relative isolation. You won't be queuing for photographs or dodging crowds like you might on some of the more famous Perthshire peaks. The views from the top are genuinely worth the effort - moorland rolls out below, and the river glints through the trees if the light's right. Bring a decent pair of boots; the ground gets boggy in places, especially after rain.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks dotted around Aberfeldy - and there's a decent cluster within a few miles - Creag Loisgte makes an excellent half-day excursion. It's close enough that you won't waste your whole afternoon driving, but enough of a walk to feel like you've actually gone somewhere. Free to access, naturally. Go early if you can; the midges can be murder in the afternoon during summer. Autumn's probably your sweet spot - clearer air, fewer bugs, and the light hits differently on the valley below.
