Cluny Rock

The walk up Cluny Rock from Aberfeldy takes about forty minutes if you're not dawdling, and rewards you with proper views across the Tay Valley. It's not a vast mountain - the peak itself is modest - but the scramble up pays dividends. The rock formation is distinctive enough that you'll spot it long before you arrive, which is rather satisfying.

This one works best for families with kids old enough to handle a bit of scrambly terrain and walkers after a short, sharp leg-stretcher rather than a full day's expedition. The views are genuinely good, taking in Aberfeldy town below and the surrounding hills rolling away toward Perthshire. On a clear day it's well worth the effort. On a grey one, less so - you'll get the views but lose the drama.

There's no entrance fee or facilities to speak of, which means you can head up whenever suits. Allow an hour total if you include sitting about at the top. Start early if you're visiting in summer when daylight hangs about; winter ascents are doable but you'll want to be off the hill before dark.

Stay at one of the caravan parks nearby - Aberfeldy Caravan Park is only 1.4 miles away, or try Pitilie Pods a shade further - and use Cluny Rock as a morning outing before tackling something longer in the afternoon. It fits well with exploring the wider Tay Valley walks without demanding too much commitment.
