Weather Hill

Weather Hill rises above the valleys south of Kendal with the sort of stubborn, no-fuss character you'd expect from a Lakeland fell. It's not the tallest summit - 319 metres - but the view across the Kent estuary and over to Morecambe Bay makes the walk properly rewarding.

The pull up from Kendal takes a couple of hours depending on your pace and fitness. Most people come via Scout Scar or approach from the bridleway side, and once you're on top, the exposed moorland feels genuinely remote even though you're only a few miles from town. On a clear day you can see right across to the Yorkshire fells. When it's cloudy (and let's be honest, this is Cumbria) the clouds roll across the summit like something's constantly being wiped clean.

This is walker territory, pure and simple. Families with young legs will manage it fine - the terrain's straightforward enough - but you'll want proper boots given how boggy things get after rain. History enthusiasts might find the Bronze Age cairns scattered about interesting, though they're not exactly dramatic features. Allow three hours return if you're taking your time and enjoying the views.
