Weardale

Weardale itself isn't really a single attraction - it's the entire river valley that cuts through County Durham, and that's rather the point. This is proper walking country, with the River Wear running alongside the B6278 all the way from the market town of Stanhope up towards the moorland. Most people come here to walk the valley floor or tackle sections of the Wear Valley Way, which threads through villages like Frosterley and Wolsingham.

The dale is genuinely lovely in late spring when the riverside meadows are full of wildflowers, though it's worth knowing upfront that this isn't dramatic Lake District scenery. It's quieter, more intimate - limestone villages, old chapels, and woodland that closes in on you as you head deeper upstream. Families with younger kids will find the villages themselves pleasant enough for a wander and a tea stop, but don't expect adrenaline. Serious hikers and photographers will get far more from it.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Heather View and Greenfoot are both practically on the doorstep - you can spend a morning exploring on foot without a car. The beauty of Weardale is that it's free. No admission charges, no entrance gates. Just pull over, lace your boots, and get going. A few hours will give you a proper feel for the place. Go in autumn if you can; the light is better and it's less crowded than summer.

Weardale works best as part of a broader North Pennines break rather than a destination in itself. Pair it with the heritage sites around Stanhope or push up towards the Pennine Way if you're a serious walker.
