Waun-y-Llyn

A modest hilltop on the Flintshire-Denbighshire border that punches above its weight for views. Waun-y-Llyn sits at around 1,500 feet, and on a clear day you're rewarded with sightlines across the Welsh moorland rolling toward Snowdonia and, on good visibility, the Cheshire Plain stretching back toward Chester.

It's not a dramatic peak - you won't find dramatic crags or a summit shelter - but that's partly the appeal. The walk up from nearby villages is steady rather than punishing, making it proper accessible for families with older kids and casual walkers who don't want to spend five hours slogging up Pen-y-ghent. The moorland terrain is open and honest. No false summits. The summit cairn is modest but the vantage point is genuine.

Walkers get the most from this one. It pairs well with a longer ramble across the ridge toward Moel Famau or down into the Wye Valley if you're after a fuller day. Chester is close enough for a base - about 30 minutes' drive - and staying at either Honeypot Hideaways or Willow Farm Glamping puts you within striking distance for an early start without the commute feeling like part of the adventure.

Allow two to three hours for the ascent and descent depending on fitness. There's no café at the top, so bring water. The moorland path can be boggy after rain, so decent boots are non-negotiable. Best visited outside peak summer weekends when the car parks around the base aren't rammed.
