Waun Y Gadair

The walk up Waun Y Gadair is straightforward enough, which means you'll actually make it to the top without needing a sherpa or a lie-down. At 645 metres, it's not towering, but the views across Mid Wales roll out properly once you're up there - moorland stretching toward the Cambrians, the kind of landscape that makes you understand why people ramble here instead of queuing at theme parks.

Starting from near Llanidloes, you're looking at a couple of hours' walking depending on your pace and which route you take. The paths are well-trodden, which is both good news (less chance of getting lost) and bad news (you won't feel remotely alone on a decent weekend). It's bog-standard moorland terrain - nothing technical, nothing that requires special kit beyond proper boots and a waterproof because this is Wales and it rains.

Families with older kids will get something out of it. Younger ones might find the walking tedious and the landscape a bit samey. Serious walkers will find it a decent leg-stretcher between Red Kite Touring Park or Clywedog Riverside if you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites. It's the kind of walk you do to feel like you've earned your breakfast, not because it's going to blow your mind.

Free to walk, obviously. No visitor centre, no café at the summit - just you, the wind, and views that disappear into cloud about half the time you visit. Go early, bring snacks, and check the forecast before you set out.
