Waun Goch, Stone

Out on the hills west of Hereford sits Waun Goch Stone, a Bronze Age standing stone that's been watching over the landscape for roughly 4,000 years. It's not flashy - just a weathered upright slab of rock, but that's rather the point. You've got to walk to it, which sorts out the casual visitors from the proper history types who actually want to understand the land.

The stone itself tells you something about Iron Age people and their relationship with the high ground. It's solitary, commanding views across the Herefordshire hills, and honestly that's where the appeal lies. This isn't a visitor centre with interpretive boards. There's no café, no shop, no crowds. You turn up, you find it, you stand there and think about who put it here and why.

Walkers will get the most from this - it rewards a morning's wandering from the nearby campsites around Olchon Valley or Kaya at Blackhill Farm. Allow an hour or two depending on fitness and how lost you get. There's no admission charge because there's nothing formal here, just access to what's essentially someone's field. Check with locals in Hereford before heading out; the route isn't signposted and weather can make paths tricky.

It's the sort of place that reminds you why people camp in Herefordshire in the first place - proper countryside, genuine archaeology, no theatre.
