Waun Goch, Mounds

Two Bronze Age mounds rising from Herefordshire farmland, Waun Goch is the kind of site that rewards a detour if you're already walking in the area around Hereford. There's not much to it, frankly - a pair of earthworks that you can circle in twenty minutes - but there's something satisfying about standing on ground that's seen three thousand years of weather and still holding its shape.

The mounds themselves are modest. You won't get a view that takes your breath away, and there's no visitor infrastructure to speak of. This is archaeology as it exists in the landscape, not locked behind museum glass. Walkers exploring the Herefordshire countryside - especially those basing themselves at Olchon Valley Campsite or Chapel House Farm Campsite - might swing by if they're in the right part of the county, but it's not a standalone destination.

History enthusiasts will find the Bronze Age context interesting, and it works well as a waypoint on a longer ramble rather than the main event. Children will get bored quickly unless they're already keen on Iron Age forts and ancient earthworks. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light's better and you'll have the place to yourself.

You don't need to book anything or pay an entrance fee - just turn up and have a look. If you're camping nearby or driving through Herefordshire, it's worth the ten-minute stop. But don't rearrange your trip specifically for it.
