Waterfall on Allt Grannda

The walk up Allt Grannda is steep enough to make your calves complain, but the waterfall at the top rewards the effort properly. Water crashes down a narrow rocky gully with real force, especially after rain when it's genuinely impressive. You're looking at maybe forty minutes each way from Kyle, depending on fitness and how many times you stop to catch your breath.

It's a serious walk rather than a casual stroll - the path gets boggy in places and the climb is relentless. Hiking boots aren't optional here. The surrounding Highland landscape is brooding and raw, which some people find magnificent and others find a bit bleak. On a grey Scottish day it can feel properly wild.

Historians and geology types will appreciate what's happening with the water's erosion patterns in the rock. Families with young kids should think twice unless they're determined walkers. The waterfall itself isn't a long stay attraction - thirty minutes maximum for most people - but the walk is the point.

Go when the water table is high, so avoid dry spells in summer. Early autumn works well. If you're camping at Glenshiel just down the road, this makes a solid half-day outing that leaves you genuinely tired in the good way. There's nothing else at the falls themselves - no café, no visitor centre, just the water and the hills. That's either its greatest strength or a reason to pass it by, depending on what you're after.
