Loch Gorm Beag

The water here is so still it barely looks real. Loch Gorm Beag sits in the Highland landscape like someone's forgotten to finish painting it - moorland rising up on all sides, the occasional birch tree, nothing fussy. You'll find it near Kyle, which is where most people pass through on their way somewhere else, so the loch stays proper quiet.

It's a short walk to reach the water's edge, and once you're there you've got decent views across to the hills. The scale is intimate rather than dramatic - don't come expecting Loch Ness theatre. What you get instead is the chance to stand still for twenty minutes without hearing another human voice, which counts for something these days.

Walkers will appreciate the location. It's accessible enough that you won't need serious kit, but it feels genuinely remote. Families might find it a bit too slow-paced - there's no facilities, no interpretive boards, just water and landscape. Photographers could spend a proper chunk of time here, especially when the light's doing something interesting across the moorland.

If you're camping nearby at Reraig on Skye, it's worth a morning detour before heading back to the caravan. Nothing is going to blow your mind, but it's the kind of place that settles something in your head after a week of more famous views. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the lingering type. Free, obviously - there's no one to charge you.
