Waterfall Low

Don't expect rushing water at Waterfall Low - the name's a bit misleading for what is actually a modest Derbyshire peak rather than a cascade. Standing at a respectable height in the Peak District's limestone country near Stoke-on-Trent, this hill offers solid walking with rewarding views across the rolling countryside.

The summit itself is nothing spectacular, but the walk up rewards you with panoramic vistas over the White Peak's characteristic dry stone wall patterns. On a clear day, you can see for miles across the patchwork fields towards the Staffordshire border. It's proper walking country - boots essential, and probably best avoided in wet weather when the limestone paths get slippery.

Families with older children who don't mind a bit of a trek will enjoy this, though it's definitely one for confident walkers rather than casual strollers. The route up takes about an hour from most starting points, depending on your fitness level.

If you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Crowtrees Caravan Site or Common End Farm Campsite, this makes for a decent half-day expedition. Pack a flask and some sandwiches - there's nowhere to grab refreshments on the hill itself. Best tackled in the morning when the light's good for photography and before any afternoon crowds arrive.
