You'll find this Victorian water trough just east of Colchester, a modest but genuine relic from when horses needed proper watering stations. Named after Frederick Joshua Richardson, it's the sort of thing you walk past a dozen times before actually stopping to look - but once you do, it tells you something real about how people and animals moved through Essex a century ago.

It's not a destination in itself, frankly. You won't spend an hour here. But if you're staying at Colchester Country Park, which is practically on the doorstep, or any of the caravan sites within a few miles - Swallows Field, Teybrook Orchard, Ardleigh - it's worth a five-minute detour on a walk around town. The sort of thing local history buffs actually care about, and kids might find it interesting as a "what was this for?" teaching moment rather than entertainment.

The trough itself is unpretentious - genuine Victorian ironwork that's weathered properly. No visitor centre, no admission charge as far as we can tell, just a piece of Colchester's working past sitting where it's always been. That's either charming or underwhelming depending on what you came looking for. If you're after manicured attractions with gift shops, move on. If you like stumbling onto the real bones of a place, this fits the bill. Best visited on a proper walk through the town rather than as a standalone trip.
