Water Head

The walk up Water Head starts innocuously enough near Biggar, but it's proper steep once you commit to the climb. This isn't a gentle stroll - it's a genuine hill walk that rewards you with views across the Southern Uplands that stretch for miles on a clear day.

The peak itself sits at 675 metres, which doesn't sound enormous until you're huffing your way up the moorland path. The terrain is typical Scottish Lowland stuff: rough grass, the occasional bog patch, and wind that seems to come from everywhere at once. On a decent day the vista opens out nicely, taking in the rolling landscape that makes this part of South Lanarkshire feel properly wild despite being relatively close to civilisation.

Walkers will get the most out of Water Head. It's not a casual family afternoon - you'll need decent boots and at least two hours for the round trip, longer if you want to properly enjoy the summit. The path is well-trodden enough that you won't get lost, but it's not manicured or easy.

If you're staying at Mount View Caravan Park nearby, Water Head makes a solid morning or early afternoon excursion. It pairs well with exploring the wider Lowland hills in the area. The ascent is genuinely testing without being technical, so experienced hill walkers will find it satisfying rather than challenging. Don't expect cafes or facilities at the top - bring water and a map.
