Water Feature

There's something about the way light catches water that stops you in your tracks. Water Feature, a gallery space near Whitley Bay, does exactly that - it's one of those places that sneaks up on you because you're not quite expecting art to be doing the heavy lifting in a seaside town.

The space itself is the thing. Rather than the usual white-wall gallery setup, this place takes water - literal water features, fountains, installations - and makes it the artwork. You're standing there watching it move, reflect, change depending on the light and the time of day. It's contemplative without being pretentious, which is a proper balancing act.

Stay a good hour if you want to actually look rather than just tick a box. Bring the kids and they'll watch the water hypnotically - it holds their attention better than most interactive exhibits manage. History types might find it a bit light on narrative, but anyone who cares about how space and environment work will get something from it.

Whitley Bay itself is just up the coast, so this works nicely as a morning or afternoon stop if you're based at Parkdean Resorts Whitley Bay or the Old Hartley Caravan Club site nearby. On a grey North East day, which let's be honest is often, the light through water becomes genuinely moving. It's not a full-day draw, but it's well worth the detour if you're in the area.
