Watchtree Nature Reserve

The wetlands here are genuinely absorbing - proper working nature reserve rather than a manicured visitor attraction. Watchtree, just outside Wigton, sits on the Solway Firth marshes and draws birdwatchers from across the region. You'll find hides dotted through the reserve where the serious scope-carriers spend hours waiting for redshank, curlew, or if you're lucky, the occasional whooper swan drifting in from Scandinavia.

Walks are straightforward enough - mostly flat trails winding through reed beds and wet grassland, though your boots will take a battering if the water table's high. Allow an hour minimum, longer if you're actually interested in identifying anything beyond "duck". The light gets proper moody in late afternoon, which is when the birds are most active anyway.

This isn't somewhere to drag reluctant teenagers. Families with junior naturalists and genuine birdwatchers get the most from it. Winter brings the biggest congregations of wildfowl, though spring migration can be equally rewarding if you know what you're looking at. Free access, as far as anyone can tell.

If you're staying at Thornfield Camping Cabins or Glendale Holiday Park nearby, it's a solid morning's outing before heading into Wigton itself. Pairs well with a walk round the town's Georgian streets afterwards, though the reserve is the draw. Don't expect visitor facilities - bring your own coffee.
