About Brae Fell
It's a proper walk - not a gentle stroll but nothing that requires mountaineering experience either. The climb rewards you with views across the Northern Fells toward the Lake District proper, and on a clear day you can see right across to the Solway Firth. The fell itself is rough moorland, heather and grass underfoot, with a cairn at the summit that's satisfying without being dramatic.
Walkers will get the most from this one. It's the kind of place where you go for the walk itself rather than a showstopping view, which suits some temperaments perfectly and leaves others feeling they might've spent their time elsewhere. Allow two to three hours depending on your pace and which route you take up from the lower slopes.
If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Kestrel Lodge, Caldbeck Camping, or Carrock Glamping Pods are all within four miles - Brae Fell makes a solid morning expedition before heading back for lunch. It's genuinely free, obviously, and there's no visitor centre or facilities at the top, so bring water and pack accordingly.
Go when the weather's reasonable. Winter rain makes it bog standard in the worst sense.
