Watchhill Wood

The woodland floor here is properly soft underfoot - thick moss, damp earth, the kind that makes you want to walk barefoot if you weren't sensible enough to wear decent boots. Watchhill Wood, just outside Wigton, is the sort of place locals know about but most visitors drive straight past. It's not huge, and that's rather the point.

What you're getting is genuine working forest - Forestry Commission-managed conifers mixed with broadleaves, rides that open up suddenly onto views, and the kind of quiet you don't find often enough. The main draw is the walking. There are proper trails, though nothing alarming grade-wise, and on a dry day the paths are excellent. Come in autumn and you'll have that particular kind of woodland gold light filtering through the canopy. Spring brings bluebells in patches, which is always worth timing a visit for.

It's a solid stop for families with school-age kids who can manage a couple of hours on foot without complaining. Older walkers will appreciate the network and the space to breathe. History buffs won't find much - it's forestry rather than estate grounds - so if you're after ruins or stately homes, look elsewhere.

Free to access, and there's usually space to park near the entrance. Allow two to three hours depending on how many routes you fancy. It pairs well with North Lakes Country Park, just five miles south, if you're basing yourself in that area. Go early on weekends; by midday the car park fills up.
