Watch Cairn

The walk up Watch Cairn from Castle Douglas takes you through proper Scottish moorland - rough grassland, wind-bitten heather, the kind of terrain that makes your calves work for their supper. It's not a massive peak, but the views south across Dumfries and Galloway toward the Solway are genuinely worth the effort. The cairn itself sits at the top, that unmissable pile of stones that marks the summit, and on a clear day you're looking out across rolling farmland and water that stretches all the way to the Lakeland hills beyond the border.

Allow a couple of hours for the round trip from Castle Douglas - it's straightforward enough, well-trodden, and the climb builds steadily without any scrambling nonsense. Walkers will appreciate the relative solitude and the proper countryside feel. Families with older kids (say ten-plus) should manage it fine; younger ones might find it a bit of a slog with nothing obvious to keep them entertained at the top beyond the view itself.

Best visited in autumn when the light's sharp and golden, or early summer if you want to avoid the midges that can be a real nuisance from July onwards. It's free, obviously - it's a hill. If you're staying at Loch Ken Holiday Park nearby, this makes an excellent morning outing before heading back for lunch. The park sits just under five miles away, so it's genuinely convenient rather than something bolted onto a bigger day out.
