Washingley Hall (site of)

There's not much to see at Washingley Hall these days - just earthworks and cropmarks in a Cambridgeshire field - but that's rather the point. This is where a Saxon hall once stood, and if you're into Anglo-Saxon archaeology, the site tells a proper story without needing a visitor centre or gift shop to spell it out.

The location itself, east of Peterborough, sits in that quietly important stretch of the Fens where settlement patterns shifted dramatically after the Romans left. You won't find dramatic ruins or reconstructions here. What you get instead is the chance to stand where someone's home once anchored a whole community, and to read the landscape itself if you know how.

History enthusiasts and archaeology students will find it worthwhile. Casual tourists expecting something photogenic will likely feel short-changed after five minutes. The real value comes from visiting as part of a broader exploration of Saxon Cambridgeshire - combine it with local museum finds and you start building a picture of the period.

If you're based at one of the excellent nearby campsites - Castle Farm or Ferry Meadows are both top-rated - it's worth a detour on a country walk, but not a trip-maker in itself. Allow 20 minutes unless you're stopping for sketching or detailed photography. No facilities on-site, so come prepared. Free to visit, obviously, since there's nothing formal there to charge for.
