Warley Moor Reservoir

The water here sits high up on the moors above Keighley, surrounded by nothing but rolling hills and sheep. Warley Moor Reservoir is the sort of place you'd stumble upon while walking rather than deliberately seek out, though once you're there it's proper worth the effort. The walk around the perimeter takes a good hour or so depending on your pace, and the views back toward the valley are excellent on a clear day. It's a working reservoir - so don't expect facilities or crowds. Walkers will get the most from it, particularly those tackling the longer moorland routes that thread through this part of West Yorkshire. The water itself is unremarkable to look at, honestly, but the isolation and the sense of being somewhere genuinely quiet makes it special. There's no visitor centre or refreshments, so bring what you need. The nearest town is Keighley, which is useful for a base, and if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Upwood Holiday Park or Old Chamber Camping, you're well positioned for exploring the wider moorland. The best time is late spring through early autumn when the weather's more reliable and the moors are less bleak. Winter here feels properly exposed. It's not a destination on its own - you won't spend more than ninety minutes here - but as part of a broader moorland walk it fits nicely into a Yorkshire break.
