Walmer Castle and Gardens

The Tudor rose garden at Walmer Castle is the real star turn here - a proper English garden that actually justifies the walk around the grounds. The castle itself is a low, squat fortress built by Henry VIII in the 1540s as coastal defence against French invasion, and it's stood guard over Deal ever since. You get a genuine sense of its defensive purpose when you climb to the bastions and see how the gun positions commanded the beach.

Inside, the rooms are small and atmospheric rather than grand. The state apartments - added when the castle became an official residence in the 18th century - have some lovely furniture and portraits, but the gardens are what pull you back. They're laid out in the Tudor style with clipped hedges, roses, and neat geometric beds that feel intimate rather than showy. On a good day you can sit on the terrace and actually relax, which is rare at these places.

History buffs will spend two to three hours here comfortably. Families with younger children might find the inside a bit dull after 45 minutes, though the gardens keep everyone occupied longer. It's free for English Heritage members; non-members pay entry. Allow at least two hours if you're doing the lot properly.

From the camping options near Deal - Kingsdown is closest at just over a mile - this makes an easy morning or afternoon trip. It pairs well with a walk along the shingle beach or a look at Deal's seafront. The castle itself sits right on the coast, so you're never far from sand and sea air.
