Time Ball Tower

There's a Victorian contraption on Deal's seafront that still does the job it was built for in 1855 - drops a ball down a pole at precisely 1pm every day so ships in the harbour could set their chronometers. The Time Ball Tower itself is modest, a red-brick structure you can spot from the promenade, but what makes it worth a stop is seeing how the Victorians solved the problem of synchronising time across the naval fleet without radio.

Inside, it's small and focused - a proper working museum rather than a sprawling visitor attraction. You'll see the mechanism that powers the drop, learn why accuracy mattered for maritime navigation, and get a sense of Deal's importance as a port town. The whole thing takes about twenty minutes, maybe thirty if you're properly curious about clockwork and Victorian engineering.

It's genuinely useful if you're already exploring Deal's seafront - the town's got a proper shingle beach and some decent fish and chip shops - but I wouldn't drive in specially unless you're already camping nearby at Kingsdown or Hawthorn Farm. The real pull is combining it with a wider coastal walk or a visit to Deal Castle, which sits just along the beach and is far more substantial.

Best visited on a day when you can actually catch the 1pm drop; turning up at 1:15pm defeats the purpose entirely. Free admission, though opening hours can be patchy, so ring ahead before you make the trip.
