Deal Maritime and Local History Museum

The ground floor of this volunteer-run museum in Deal town centre is where the real action happens - a proper working replica of a Victorian chemist's shop, complete with original bottles and period fixtures that make you feel like you've stepped back about 150 years. Upstairs holds the maritime stuff: model ships, salvage from wrecks, bits of Deal's seafaring past when it was a major anchorage. It's small enough that you won't be trudging around for hours, which is either a blessing or a disappointment depending on how deep your interest runs.

The place works best for history buffs and anyone with a genuine curiosity about how coastal towns actually functioned before tourism took over. Kids might manage twenty minutes, maybe thirty if the chemist's shop holds their attention - it's tactile enough to prevent complete boredom. Families camping at Kingsdown or Sandwich Leisure just down the coast could easily tack this onto a wet afternoon without feeling short-changed.

It's open Friday to Sunday, 1-4pm, and admission is genuinely free - worth knowing when you're juggling multiple attractions across East Kent. The volunteer curators clearly care about what they've assembled here, even if the displays are a touch old-fashioned. Give yourself ninety minutes maximum, or you'll be reading the same placard twice. Perfectly decent for what it is, and that's saying something for a small seaside museum run entirely on goodwill.
