Walls (remains) of Otford Palace

The brick and flint ruins scattered across a field just outside Sevenoaks are all that remain of Otford Palace, once a proper medieval seat of power. Archbishop Warham built the place in the early 1500s, and for a brief time it rivalled Hampton Court in grandeur. Now? You're looking at broken walls, the odd arch, and a lot of ground to piece together in your imagination.

It's genuinely free to wander, which is the best part. The site sits quietly alongside the village, accessible from a footpath, and there's something oddly moving about tracing the outline of what was clearly a substantial palace. History buffs will spend an hour picking over the stonework and trying to map the original layout. Kids less so - there's no interpretation boards, no reconstructed sections, just walls. The setting's pleasant enough, with the Darent valley around you, but you won't be gripped if your interest is only surface-level.

Go in spring or early autumn when the grass is manageable and you can actually see the walls without fighting vegetation. Allow 45 minutes if you're thorough. It's not a destination by itself, but combine it with a stay at Thriftwood Country Park - just four miles away - and a walk through Sevenoaks' town centre, and you've got a decent afternoon. The palace doesn't photograph dramatically, which means fewer tourists milling about. That quietness is rather the point.
