The gardens at Wallington sprawl across proper lovely grounds just outside Newcastle's reach, and they're worth the drive north from the city. What you get is a mix of formal Victorian gardens and wilder woodland walks - the kind of place where you can spend three hours getting genuinely lost or knock it out in ninety minutes if you're in a hurry.

The house itself is a substantial stone building, but honestly, most people come for the grounds. There's a central lawn that opens onto woodland paths, with mature trees creating decent shade even on warm days. The walled garden is the star turn - geometric beds, proper horticulture, the works. If you're into plants and design, you'll spend ages here. Kids will get bored after an hour unless they're the exploring type who'll disappear down every woodland trail.

Historically it matters - this is a Trevelyon family seat with proper pedigree - but you don't need to care about that to enjoy it. It's really a walkers' spot, somewhere to stretch legs and breathe quieter air than Newcastle offers.
