National Trust - Wallington

The moment you walk through Wallington's gates, you're in proper countryside - sweeping lawns roll away from a Georgian house, and the whole place has that slightly wild, authentic feel that Trust properties do so well. This is less about the building and more about the grounds, which sprawl across nearly 14,000 acres of Northumberland parkland. You can spend a solid day here without retracing your steps.

The woodland walks are the draw. There are streams to cross, a working kitchen garden that actually produces vegetables, and enough rolling paths to keep walkers happy for hours. The house itself contains some handsome interiors and artwork, but frankly the grounds are where Wallington earns its keep. Families won't struggle - kids can run about, there's space to breathe, and you won't feel boxed in like you might at more formal gardens.

Allow at least three hours if you're serious about exploring, more if you like a proper ramble. The nearest town is Newcastle upon Tyne, which means it's well-placed if you're based at Northumberland Nook a few miles away - excellent pairing for a long weekend. The park gives you the grand estate experience without the crowds you'd fight at places closer to Edinburgh or Manchester. Worth the drive from Newcastle, though check opening times and admission prices before you head out.
