Wall Roman Site

The Romans left their mark all over Britain, but Wall is one of those stops that actually rewards a proper visit. It's the remains of Letocetum, a fort and settlement that once sat along the crucial military road Ryknild Street, connecting the garrison towns across the Midlands. You're standing where soldiers once marched, where trade happened, where life unfolded nearly two thousand years ago.

What you get is the fort's outline - ditches, ramparts, the bones of the place - plus a small museum that makes sense of what you're looking at. Without it, you'd just see lumps in a field. With it, the scale clicks into place. The setting itself is peaceful, more atmospheric than you'd expect for something this close to Burton-on-Trent.

History buffs will get the most from this. Families with younger kids might find it a bit thin on the ground unless they're genuinely keen on Romans - there's walking involved and not much to do once you've read the boards. If you're already exploring the wider Midlands, though, it's worth the detour. It fits nicely as a morning stop before heading to Kingfisher Holiday Park or the Cannock Chase site, both within easy reach. The walk around takes maybe ninety minutes if you linger.

Go midweek if you can. Weekends bring dog walkers who'll remind you this is still very much a working piece of countryside, not a heritage park.
