Walk Wood

The woodland path through Walk Wood stretches for a decent couple of miles east of Royston, and it's the sort of place you'd miss entirely if you weren't looking for it. Ancient oak and beech stand thick enough to block out the worst of the Essex weather, making it brilliant even when it's drizzling. The ground underfoot stays firm enough year-round, which counts for something when you're dealing with East Anglian clay.

It's proper walker territory rather than a destination with views or ruins at the end. You're here for the walk itself - the quiet of it, the chance to actually think without traffic noise. Families with young kids under eight will find it adequate rather than thrilling; no viewpoints, no playground theatrics, just trees and the occasional bird. Older children who enjoy spotting wildlife or pressing on regardless of where the path leads will get more from it.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring what you need. The forest is free to roam, though opening hours aren't widely published - common sense applies. Allow an hour for a comfortable loop without rushing. The nearest proper accommodation is Pightle Farm Campsite just 4 miles away, which works well if you're spending a few days exploring the Royston area and want something low-key nearby. It's not flashy, but it doesn't pretend to be. Worth combining with a walk into Royston itself rather than banking a whole day on it.
