Rowley's Hill

The highest point in Cambridgeshire isn't exactly the Pennines - at 128 metres, Rowley's Hill is more of a modest swell than a dramatic summit. But that's precisely what makes it worth the walk if you're based around Royston. From the top, you get proper views across the flatlands towards Hertfordshire and beyond. It's the sort of place where the landscape suddenly makes sense; you can see how the roads and villages slot together across the county.

Walkers will get the most from it. It's a straightforward outing, nothing that demands serious kit or fitness, and the surrounding countryside is gently rolling and easy on the legs. History types might find the trigonometric marker stone interesting - these things pepper Britain's high points like bread crumbs. Families with younger children should manage it fine, though they'll only stay interested for as long as it takes to reach the top and have a snack.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no café, no car park with facilities - so come prepared with water and a packed lunch. Allow a couple of hours for the walk and a good look around. It works best as part of a wider countryside ramble through the area rather than a dedicated trip.
