The woodland around Wakefield Wood offers proper respite if you're based at one of the caravan parks near Warwick. It's a straightforward forest walk - nothing dramatic, but good for stretching legs between Warwick town centre visits or Warwick Castle.

You'll find yourself among mature trees and woodland paths that meander without too much fuss. The terrain is manageable, so families with younger kids won't struggle, though there's not much in the way of dramatic features or viewpoints to keep attention for hours. The real appeal is the quiet. Come on a weekday morning and you'll have the place largely to yourself.

If you're staying at Mousley House Farm or Warwick Racecourse Campsite - both within striking distance - it's worth an hour's walk before lunch. The woodland feels genuinely separate from suburban Warwick despite being only a couple of miles out. Bring wellies if there's been rain; the paths get boggy in patches.

The sort of place where you go because it's there and near where you're sleeping, rather than a deliberate detour. Dog walkers will find it useful. Birdwatchers might spot something interesting in season. History types will want Warwick Castle itself (4.9 miles away at Knight's Village if you're staying nearby). For a proper woodland experience with more going on, you'd be better served elsewhere in Warwickshire, but if you need a quick forest circuit from base camp, Wakefield Wood does the job without complaint.
