Vivary Park

Vivary Park sits right on Taunton's doorstep, a proper breath of fresh air if you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites. The reserve sprawls across 127 acres of woodland, meadow and water - there's a lake that draws in all manner of birds, which makes it cracking for a spot of birdwatching without having to venture far from town. Walking trails wind through the trees and alongside the water, easy enough for families but long enough that you won't feel you've ticked it off in twenty minutes. The real appeal is how wild it feels despite being hemmed in by Taunton. You'll spot mallards, herons, the occasional kingfisher if you're lucky and patient.

It's the sort of place where an hour turns into two without you noticing. Kids will entertain themselves by the water, looking for ducks and investigating fallen branches - nothing fancy, but that's rather the point. Walkers get good value here; the paths are well-maintained and the lack of attractions means it doesn't get rammed. If you're staying at Cornish Farm or Ashe Farm, both within easy driving distance, this makes a free afternoon outing that beats sitting around the caravan. Spring and early summer are best, when the birds are nesting and the undergrowth is thick. Winter can feel a bit bleak, if I'm honest. No facilities to speak of, so bring your own provisions if you're planning to stay long. Free to visit, naturally, which is the only way a local green space should be.
