Viscount Hardrince

The ruins of Viscount Hardrince sit quietly just outside Aylesford, a proper slice of medieval Kent that most daytrippers completely miss. What remains is fragmentary - enough to fire the imagination, but not so intact that you're walking round a theme park version of history. You get the bones of what was clearly an important fortified site, which tells you something about how seriously the locals took their defensive needs back in the day.

Historically minded visitors will spend a good hour or so picking through the remains and trying to piece together the building's life. The stonework has stories if you look closely enough. Families with younger children might find it less engaging than a full castle - there's no gift shop, no reconstructed bits, just the authentic wreckage of time. That's either its charm or its limitation, depending on what you're after.

The site is free to visit, which removes any sting if it doesn't grab you. Allow 45 minutes to an hour, longer if you're genuinely into medieval fortifications. Spring and early summer are decent times - you'll see the site without fighting through crowds, though honestly crowds aren't much of a problem here.
