Village Spinney

The woodland here isn't dramatic or vast - it's the sort of place you wander into and suddenly remember why you liked forests in the first place. Village Spinney is a quiet pocket of trees near Daventry, proper solid English woodland without any fuss attached. You get a decent walk through it, the kind where you're picking your way between roots and dodging low branches, and that's exactly what makes it worth the visit.

It's best suited to families with children old enough to manage uneven ground and walkers after something low-key. You won't find dramatic viewpoints or a tea room at the end - this is just trees, paths, and the sort of peace you can't get anywhere near a car park's main entrance. An hour does the job nicely, though you could easily stretch it if you're the type to stop and identify birds or sit on a fallen log for a bit.

If you're staying at Anita's Touring Caravan Park just up the road, this makes an ideal morning walk before breakfast gets packed away. It's close enough that you're not burning petrol for the sake of it. Fir Tree Campsite, a similar distance away, works just as well. There's something genuinely appealing about having woodland this accessible - no entrance fees, no crowds, no interpretive panels telling you what you're looking at. You just get on with it.
