The viewpoint here gives you a proper look at Lancashire's landscape - moorland stretching out, the Lune Valley below, and on a clear day you can pick out the Pennines in the distance. It's the kind of spot where you genuinely understand why people bother walking up hills.

This is a nature reserve, so it's less about facilities and more about what the land itself offers. Come for the views, stay for the walking. Depending on your legs and how much time you've got, you can potter about for half an hour or make a proper afternoon of it. The ground can get boggy after rain - proper bog, not just damp - so decent boots matter.

Families with older kids will get on fine here. Younger ones might find it a bit samey unless you make a game of spotting birds or looking for particular plants. If you're into moorland ecology or just fancy a breather from the car, this works. Walkers heading out from Lancaster or exploring the wider area will find it rewarding, especially as part of a longer route.

The nearby caravan parks - Mill House Farm Pods, Moss Wood, and Claylands - all sit within a few miles, which makes this a good add-on if you're staying put for a few days. It's the sort of stop that costs nothing but time, and the views alone make it worth the detour. Check the weather before you go though. Grey skies mean you're basically staring at a car park.
