Lane Ends Amenity Area

A quiet stretch of managed woodland and grassland just outside Lancaster, Lane Ends Amenity Area offers proper countryside walking without the crowds you'll find at more famous spots. The paths wind through mixed woodland where you'll spot everything from bluebells in spring to autumn fungi if you know what to look for.

Birdwatchers do particularly well here. I counted at least a dozen species during my morning visit, including several woodpeckers and the odd buzzard circling overhead. The varied habitat - from dense woodland to open meadow - means there's always something happening if you take the time to look.

Families with young children might find it a bit limited after an hour or so. There's no playground or visitor centre, just nature doing its thing. But for anyone wanting a peaceful walk or somewhere to let the dog run free, it fits the bill perfectly.

The location works well if you're staying at one of the holiday parks scattered around this part of Lancashire. Midwood Caravan Park is barely two miles away, making it an easy morning expedition before the day gets too hot. Wilson House Holiday Park and several others are within a short drive too.

Don't expect facilities - bring a flask if you want refreshments. But for a proper countryside ramble without travelling miles from your base, it's well worth the detour.
