Plover Scar Lighthouse

The lighthouse stands isolated on the mudflats of Morecambe Bay, a white tower that looks rather lonely against the vast expanse of sand and water. It's been guiding ships since 1907, though these days you're more likely to spot dog walkers and photographers than actual vessels. Getting there requires either a boat trip from Lancaster or, if you're feeling adventurous, walking across the bay at low tide - something not to attempt without a guide.

This is genuinely more of a spot to admire from a distance than visit up close. You can reach it properly during guided walks across the bay, which operate from Lancaster and take about three hours round trip. The walk itself is the real attraction - the shifting sands, the sudden channels of water, the sheer scale of the bay. Children find it magical if they're old enough for a proper hike; younger ones will get tired fast.

If you're staying at Mill House Farm Pods or Moss Wood just a few miles away, it's worth knowing about rather than a must-do. The lighthouse photographs beautifully at golden hour, and the bay walks give you proper perspective on this corner of Lancashire. Free to view from distance, though guided bay crossings usually cost around £15-20 per person. Best visited between April and September when the weather's more reliable and guides run regular trips. Allow a full morning if you're doing the walk.
