Victoria Obelisk

The Victoria Obelisk stands on Abney Moor, a bit of a slog up from Sheffield but absolutely worth the walk if you're already heading into the Peak District. It's a proper Victorian monument - a tall stone obelisk built to commemorate Queen Victoria's reign - and it's the kind of place that rewards walkers without demanding much time once you get there.

You're looking at maybe twenty minutes to inspect it properly, take some photos, and soak in the moorland views. The obelisk itself is fairly straightforward architecture, nothing ornate, but there's something satisfying about standing next to a structure that's been here since the 1800s. On a clear day the vistas across the moor are excellent, and you'll likely have the place mostly to yourself, which can't be said for the more famous Peak District draws.

This works brilliantly as part of a broader walking day rather than a destination in itself. Pair it with a wider ramble across Abney Moor, or base yourself at one of the nearby campsites like Fox Hagg Farm or Wyming Brook Farm and make it a pit stop. History types will appreciate the Victoria connection, but honestly the main appeal is the moorland setting and the walk itself.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though you'll need sturdy shoes and proper weather preparation - it's exposed ground up there. Allow a full afternoon if you're combining it with other moorland walks.
