Vicarage Copse

The woodland here is proper woodland - dense enough that you lose the sense of the surrounding Oxfordshire countryside the moment you step in. Vicarage Copse isn't large, but it's genuine, with tall trees creating a green tunnel effect that's particularly good if you're after a bit of quiet from the glamping sites scattered nearby. You can walk it in under an hour without rushing, which makes it ideal for a morning stretch when staying at Nordic Glamping or Faringdon Grange rather than a whole-day expedition. The paths aren't signposted with military precision, so it rewards poking about a bit. Kids will find it interesting for twenty minutes or so - fallen logs to balance on, things rustling in the undergrowth - but it won't hold their attention all afternoon. If you're a walker or a botanist type, you'll get more from it. Spring's the best time; the canopy fills out and it feels entirely separate from the world. Summer's dense and airless. Winter's muddy and a bit gloomy, though the bare branches do let light in. It's free access as far as can be established, and there's no facilities to speak of - just trees and earth. Close enough to Botswicky Copse to combine with other things nearby, but really it's one for quiet mornings when you want to stretch your legs without going far from base camp.
