Verlamion

The remains of a Roman city lie scattered across fields just outside St Albans, and honestly, it takes some imagination to get excited about it. Verlamion was a proper settlement during the Iron Age and Roman period, but what you're actually looking at is earthworks, ditches, and the occasional bit of pottery if you're lucky. The site itself is free to wander, though there's no visitor infrastructure - it's just open land where locals walk their dogs.

For archaeology enthusiasts or anyone doing a serious deep-dive into Roman Britain, it's worth an hour of your time. You'll see defensive ditches and the ghostly outline of where buildings once stood. The St Albans Museum has far better artefacts and context, mind you. Kids under ten will probably find it dull unless they're already into that sort of thing.

If you're staying at Frogmore Park Homes or Cherry Green Trees - both solid options for a Hertfordshire break - it's close enough for a morning visit before heading into St Albans proper. The town itself has the cathedral and Verulamium Museum, which makes a far more satisfying day out. Allow 45 minutes here if you're genuinely interested, longer if you're photographing the landscape. Winter's actually the best time to visit; the lack of vegetation makes the earthworks clearer. Free admission means there's no excuse not to stop by, but temper your expectations. It's archaeology as archaeology actually is - mostly empty fields and educated guesswork.
