Broad Colney Lakes Nature Reserve

The lakes sit just east of St Albans, a proper working nature reserve where you're more likely to spot a great crested grebe than a tour bus. There are two main bodies of water - flooded former gravel pits that have evolved into something genuinely wild. Bring binoculars. The birdwatching is the main draw: winter brings thousands of wildfowl, while spring and summer offer breeding warblers and the odd osprey if you're lucky enough. Paths wind around the reserve, though they can get boggy after rain, so waterproof boots aren't optional.

It's a walker's reserve rather than a stroll-and-ice-cream affair. You'll need a couple of hours minimum to see anything worthwhile, longer if you're serious about the birds. This isn't the place to bring restless kids expecting activity stations - teenagers interested in wildlife or keen photographers will actually engage here. The Hertfordshire Wildlife Trust manages it, and access is free, though it's worth checking their website before you go as the site can occasionally close for conservation work.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks like Frogmore or Home Farm Glamping, this makes a proper morning or early afternoon adventure without the drive. Combine it with Aldenham Country Park a few miles away if you want a fuller day - that's got more conventional attractions alongside the nature spots. The reserve rewards patience and decent weather; grey drizzly days feel properly atmospheric, but you'll be the only person there.
