Roman Villa (site of)

There's not much to see here, to be honest. This is an archaeological site - the remains of a Roman villa somewhere east of St Albans - but unless you're seriously into excavation reports and ground surveys, you'll be looking at fields. The villa itself was occupied during the Roman period, and that's the whole story the site tells from above ground.

You won't find reconstructed walls or a visitor centre. There are no interactive displays. What you get is the knowledge that Roman people once lived here, built something substantial, and then it all got buried under Hertfordshire soil. History types with a genuine interest in Romano-British settlement patterns might find it worthwhile to locate, but casual visitors will struggle to justify the trip.

The real advantage to knowing about this site is context. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Home Farm Glamping or Aldenham Country Park are both reasonably close - and you're already exploring St Albans, you could swing by. The Roman heritage around here is substantial: St Albans itself was Verulamium, one of the biggest Roman towns in Britain. Your time would be far better spent at the Verulamium Museum and the actual city remains there, just a few miles away.

Free to visit, clearly. Allow as much time as you want - ten minutes if you know what you're looking at, or pass it by entirely if you don't. Spring or summer would be best if the site is accessible across farmland, but check locally first.
