Upper Heyford Heritage Centre

The Upper Heyford Heritage Centre occupies what was once a Second World War airfield just outside Kidlington, and it's a proper working museum rather than a static display. You get the full picture of what life looked like on an operational RAF base - the control tower, the hangars, the dispersal areas - and staff who actually know their stuff walk you through the aircraft history and the day-to-day reality of wartime operations.

It's genuinely engaging if you've got any interest in aviation or military history. Families with older kids (say, ten upwards) tend to get more from it than younger ones, though there's enough to poke around for a couple of hours without it feeling like a trudge. The setting itself is atmospheric - you're literally standing on the runway where Avros and Lancasters once taxied.

Walkers will find it worth combining with a broader explore of the surrounding countryside. The base is embedded in decent walking territory between Kidlington and the village itself, so you can easily tack it onto a longer ramble. If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Weston Caravan and Campsite, Glebe Leisure, or Greenhill Leisure are all within five miles - it makes for a solid rainy-day option or a morning's outing before heading elsewhere.

Worth checking opening times before you go, as it's volunteer-run, but if you're into that era of British history, it's absolutely worth the detour.
