About Cutteslowe Walls

Two brick walls that once divided a housing estate stand as one of Britain's most shameful monuments to social segregation. Built in 1934, these 7-foot barriers physically separated private housing from council homes in North Oxford, creating what locals dubbed 'the Berlin Wall of Oxford'. The walls ran for nearly 400 metres, complete with just two crossing points that were locked at night. Only fragments remain today, but they're powerful enough to stop you in your tracks. Most visitors spend about twenty minutes here, reading the interpretation boards that explain how residents fought a nine-year battle to tear them down. The surrounding streets tell the story better than any museum - walk along Wentworth Road and Carlton Road to see where the barriers once stood. History buffs will find this fascinating, though families with young children might struggle to convey the significance. It's free to visit and accessible year-round, though there's no formal visitor centre or facilities. The site works well as part of a broader Oxford exploration if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks around Kidlington. Oxford Glamping is just under four miles away, making this an easy detour on your way into the city. Don't expect grand ruins - this is social history at its most raw and uncomfortable.
