Upper Hall Lake

Upper Hall Lake sits just outside Belford in Northumberland, a modest stretch of water that punches above its weight if you know what to expect. It's the kind of place where you'll spot mallards pottering about, maybe a heron if you're lucky and keep still for five minutes. The water's calm most days, reflecting whatever the Northumberland sky throws at it - which is often grey, to be honest, but that's part of the appeal.

Walkers get the most from it. There's a decent circuit around the lake that takes the better part of an hour without rushing, and the surrounding countryside rolls away nicely towards the coast. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; the place attracts a reasonable variety. It's free to access and there are no daft opening hours to worry about - you just turn up.

With kids, they'll enjoy it for maybe an hour before asking if there's anything else. It's not a theme park. What it is, though, is a genuine breather between bigger attractions. If you're staying at either the Barn at Beal or Haven Haggerston Castle - both within striking distance - Upper Hall Lake makes for a proper morning walk without eating up your whole day. The Barn at Beal's restaurant is cracking if you want lunch after.

Don't expect dramatic views or crowds. This is quiet Northumberland water, and that's exactly the point.
