Upper Dean Head Reservoir

The walk up to Upper Dean Head Reservoir rewards you with proper moorland views and a decent bit of solitude - something increasingly rare around these parts. It's a moorland lake rather than a manicured attraction, so you won't find cafes or visitor facilities. What you get instead is the genuine article: dark water, rough grass, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to the Pennines in the first place.

You're looking at a straightforward 40-minute walk from Hebden Bridge, heading out past the scattered farms and up onto the open moor. The path's well-trodden but boggy in places, so proper boots matter. The reservoir itself sits between the higher peaks, catching weather that rolls in faster than you'd expect - I've seen it go from clear to drizzle in minutes. On a decent day, though, it's excellent for photographers and anyone after a bit of moorland walking without the crowds of better-known spots.

This works brilliantly as a half-day excursion from any of the holiday parks near Hebden Bridge. Old Chamber Camping and Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite are your closest bases, both within easy reach. You won't stay long once you've walked around the water and taken in the views - two hours total is realistic - but it's well worth the leg-stretch if you're camped locally. Bring a wind jacket regardless of the forecast.
