United Reformed Church

The United Reformed Church in Braintree is one of those solid Victorian buildings you might walk past without thinking twice - until you actually step inside. It's the kind of place that tells you something real about how communities worked in 19th-century Essex, away from the posturing of grander churches.

What you get is straightforward: a working church with period features that feel genuinely lived-in rather than museum-like. The interior has that particular quietness that only happens in smaller non-conformist chapels - no soaring nave to echo, just honest woodwork and simple lines. It's not flashy, which is rather the point. If you're into religious architecture or local history, it's worth an hour or so. Children might find it dull unless they're already into that sort of thing.

The church is free to visit, though you'll want to check opening hours before you go - they're a working congregation, not a full-time tourist attraction. If you're camping nearby at Golden Grove or Stocks Farm, both excellent spots just a few miles out, you could easily combine this with a proper walk around Braintree's town centre, which has retained more character than you'd expect.

It fits well into a park holiday if you want to break up days with something low-key and distinctly local - the kind of afternoon activity that shows you how people actually lived rather than another stately home.
