The Underground is Stoke-on-Trent's answer to a proper theatre venue, tucked away in the city with enough character to make an evening out feel like you've stumbled onto something genuine rather than generic. It's a working theatre that programmes theatre, comedy, music and the occasional film - the kind of place where you might catch a local production one night and a touring act the next.

The space itself has that intimate feel you only get in smaller venues. You're close enough to the performers that you can actually see what's happening, which makes a real difference whether you're watching a play or catching a live band. The programming leans toward independent and alternative stuff, so if you're after the big West End transfers you'll be disappointed, but if you like discovering things slightly off the beaten track, it's exactly where to look.

It works brilliantly as an evening activity if you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites - Luzlow or Glamping at Holly Grove Farm are both within four miles, so you're talking a short drive into town. Stone Wall Farm CL is a bit further out but still manageable. Check their current schedule online before you go, as programming varies. Some nights are better than others depending on what's on, so don't just roll up hoping for the best.

You'll want to allow a couple of hours for a show plus getting there and grabbing a drink before or after. It's less about the building itself and more about what's happening inside it - so this one's really for people who want proper entertainment, not a sightseeing tick-box.
