Tynemouth Volunteer Artillery 1859 Cannon

There's a Victorian cannon sitting on the headland at Tynemouth that's been watching over the North Sea for over 160 years. The Volunteer Artillery installed it in 1859, back when coastal defence actually meant something, and it's still there - a proper iron reminder of a very different era.

It's not the sort of thing that'll keep you entertained for hours. You walk up, have a look at it, read whatever information's on the plaque if you can decipher the lettering, and that's genuinely it. But if you're already in the area - and you probably will be if you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Whitley Bay Holiday Park or the Old Hartley Caravan Club site - it's worth the five-minute detour. The location itself is the real draw: perched on the cliffs with views across the water toward Cullercoats and back toward the bay.

History buffs get more from it than anyone else. There's something about standing next to a functioning weapon from the 1850s that brings the period into focus - industrial age paranoia, invasion fears, Britain's naval obsession. Kids might find the cannon itself interesting for a bit, though they'll want proper attractions nearby to keep them occupied.

It's free, naturally. No gates, no opening hours to worry about - just access it whenever you fancy. Spring and summer are best; winter gets properly bleak up there on the headland. Allow ten minutes, maybe fifteen if you're the type to sit on a bench afterwards and just look at the view. Pair it with a walk along the coast or a visit to Tynemouth Priory, both close by.
