Tynemouth Aquarium

The tank room at Tynemouth Aquarium is small but surprisingly absorbing - you'll find yourself staring at seahorses and tropical fish for longer than you'd expect. It's right on the seafront between Whitley Bay and Tynemouth itself, which means the setting alone justifies the walk.

This isn't a massive operation. We're talking an intimate space rather than the sprawling tanks you'd find at Newcastle's larger aquariums. Kids under eight will probably get the most from it - they move fast through the exhibits, but the touch pools and smaller fish keep them engaged for a solid hour or so. Older children might find it a bit limited unless they're genuinely into marine life.

What works is the location. You'll combine it naturally with a seaside walk, fish and chips at one of the places nearby, and maybe a look around Tynemouth Priory if you're making an afternoon of it. The cliffs here are proper dramatic - much more interesting scenery than you'd get at an inland attraction.

If you're based at Parkdean Resorts Whitley Bay - just under three miles away - it's an easy car journey or a brisk walk if the weather's decent. Old Hartley Campsite is slightly further but still very manageable. Entry fees and opening hours can change, so check ahead before you visit, but generally it operates year-round.

Worth the detour? Only if you've got young children or you're after a quick activity between beach time. Don't make it your main event.
